Animal welfare research prize 2025 awarded by the BMEL
The Animal Welfare Research Prize of the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture was awarded in two categories this year. For the first time, the prize was also awarded internationally.
With the prize, the BMEL supports the research and development of alternative methods to replace animal testing. The prize is awarded following nomination and proposal by an independent prize committee. The BMEL’s Animal Protection Research Prize, which comes with a prize money of 100,000 euros, is to be awarded to Professor Dr Hans Clevers from the Hubrecht Institute of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. His pioneering work in establishing organoids as a groundbreaking method in modern biomedical research was nominated by the BMEL’s prize committee for outstanding research on the replacement and reduction of animal testing.
The prize of 20,000 euros for social and civic commitment in the field of laboratory animals was awarded to the organisation Norecopa (Norway's National Centre and Platform for the Promotion of the so-called 3Rs), represented by Professor Dr Adrian Smith.
