The BMEL’s “Renewable Resources” Funding Programme

The redesigned Renewable Resources Funding Programme provides the basis for the continuation of the successful support provided by the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) in the area of renewable resources. The programme currently receives aorund 85 million euros from the federal budget.

is the ongoing development of a sustainable bioeconomy. The BMEL therefore supports research approaches for innovative, internationally competitive biobased products and fuels as well as innovative methods and technologies for manufacturing these. The aim of projects is no longer to provide only environmental, resource and climate protection and to bolster agriculture and forestry, but also to promote a socially acceptable bioeconomy and the conservation of biodiversity. Issues such as recycling, cascading use and integrated strategies for using facilities, such as biorefineries, are given greater emphasis, as are efficiency and economic viability.

Examples of specific funding priorities include:

  • Sustainable management of electricity sourced from biomaterial in order to secure an optimum supply of biogenic resources for production and processing facilities
  • Development of strategies for the sustainable production and use of renewable resources, paying particular attention to water
  • Local production of recyclable materials in aquatic systems, e.g. with algae, cyanobacteria or aquatic plants in order to broaden the resource base
  • Provision of information as well as social dialogue on the bioeconomy and sustainability.

The new programme for funding, development and demonstration measures in the area of renewable resources was published on 7 May 2015 and replaces the funding programme of the same name which had been in place since 2008.

The BMEL has commissioned the Agency for Renewable Resources (FNR), Hofplatz 1, D-18276 Gülzow, as the organisation to manage the project. Applications for funding can be submitted to the FNR with immediate effect.
