Argentina - Bilateral Dialogue on Sustainable Agricultural Innovations

The project promotes climate and environmentally friendly innovations in the Argentine agricultural sector and improves the framework conditions for their dissemination.

Agriculture in Argentina

Agricultural products dominate Argentina’s foreign trade and account for around 60% of the country’s total exports. For the sustainable development of the sector, it is crucial to increase productivity through the introduction of technologies as well as meeting the requirements necessary for healthy, safe and environmentally friendly production. With innovative technologies and new management systems, moder- nization and growth of the sector can be achieved. In this regard, strengthening the ecosystem for innovation holds great potential.

Argentina

The South American country has tropical areas in the extreme northeast, subtropical in the rest of the north and an extensive temperate climate zone to cold climate regions in the south.

According to the very different climatic zones of Argentina, the ecoregions also vary greatly, from high and semi-deserts to tropical cloud forests, the Chaco and the Pampas, as well as savanna, scrubland and Magellanic subpolar forests. This is due to its enormous size, especially in the north-south direction. Area 2,791,8201 skm, 45.38 million inhabitants.

The Project

The project promotes the dissemination of environmentally friendly innovations in collaboration with diverse stakeholders. For example, together with the Argen- tine Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, the institutional and legal framework for agricultural technology innovations is being improved, a national innovation ecosystem is being promoted and cooperation between research insti- tutes in both countries is being strengthened. Key topics include Smart Agriculture with focus on digitalization in livestock farming, biophytosanitary products and sustainability indicators. The project is aimed at innovation promotion professionals in private and public institutions as well as academia.

Objectives

  • Strengthen the institutional and legal framework to promote innovation in Argentina’s agricultural sector
  • Promote a cross-stakeholder innovation ecosystem for sustainable agriculture to intensify the development and diffusion of agricultural technologies
  • Expand the German-Argentine scientific cooperation on innovative agricultural production systems and pilot these innovations in isolated cases

Achievements and results

To achieves its objectives, the project relies, among other things, on cross-stakeholder dialogue events, expert panels, and participation in trade fairs and congresses. A Working Group develops recommendations to strengthen the national framework to support innovation in the Argentine agricultural sector. In addition, a systemic further development of a national innovation ecosystem for sustainable agriculture is taking place, which strengthens cross-sectoral exchange and cooperation between different institutions on innovations in the field of the above-mentioned priority topics. Bilateral cooperation in research and the piloting of innovations will also be facilitated.
