Sustainable animal breeding and husbandry in China

Partnership-based development of innovative, practice-oriented solutions for sustainable, environmentally and climate-friendly animal breeding and husbandry

Agriculture in China

With 1.4 billion people, China accounts for 18 % of the world’s population. Feeding its population is a major challenge for the country. In the past, the People’s Republic has strived to increase agricultural production by 5-10 % annually. Due to the scarcity of land, China pursues intensive agriculture, which poses considerable challenges in terms of environmental impact. In addition, the increasing prosperity of the Chinese population leads to an increased demand for milk and meat.

China

China is the world's second largest economy.

As the world's most populous country, it has to feed around 18% of the world's population. With an agricultural area of only 645 million hectares, Chinese agriculture is characterised by high pressure to increase efficiency.

The Project

In the third phase, which began in January 2022, the project is supporting its partners in the key areas of animal welfare and animal husbandry, as well as in climate adaptation and protection. Other current topics include sustainable animal husbandry, biosecurity and strengthening nutrient cycles. The project organises the exchange of information between Chinese as well as German and European partners from industry, science and various authorities, through seminars, expert trips, and digital teaching materials. It also demonstrates selected innovative approaches on Chinese demonstration farms.

Project Goals

The goals of the project are:

  • The establishment of thematic innovation networks consisting of institutional and private-sector partners for the development and dissemination of best-practice models and continuous supra-company exchange of information
  • The identification of sub-projects and pilot testing of innovative solutions on Chinese demonstration farms
  • In-company training and dissemination of successful solutions in the regions

Results and Processes

Concrete technical solutions, e.g. improving housing conditions for calf rearing, are discussed with the responsible Chinese authority, the National Animal Husbandry Service (NAHS), and the participating business partners. These solutions are then tested in several sub-projects on the demonstration farms and disseminated with the help of educational videos, manuals, various training measures, etc. After testing, the results of the project are presented to the stakeholders.
