Agroforestry reinvented: agroecological, nutrition-sensitive intensification of vegetable production under fruit trees in Western and Eastern Africa

The Project AFN

Agroecological intensification through agroforestry systems (i.e. species-rich combinations of trees and crops on one land unit) is a powerful strategy to concurrently address several of the global challenges we are currently facing. These challenges include climate change, biodiversity loss and the still existing problems of under- and malnutrition in sub-Saharan Africa with its growing populations. Current horticultural production systems are often dominated by monocropping of fruits and vegetables, high demand of manual labour and the extensive use of costly external inputs such as mineral fertilisers and pesticides, which may have negative impacts on health and the environment. The aim of the proposed project is to develop, test and promote innovative sustainable agroforestry systems (arbo-market gardens) in participatory and transdisciplinary approaches in Senegal and Kenya. These arbo-market gardens produce healthy and nutritious fruits and vegetables in an agroecological and socially acceptable way to diversify diets of local populations, transform horticulture into a resilient food system and improve livelihoods of local communities, including particularly the rural youth.
